Romance in the heat of summer!
June 24th, 2009 Posted in General Announcements“Romance” by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) is the sharp-tongued playwright’s first foray into over-the-top comedy. In this courtroom farce, Mamet takes on social hypocrisy and political correctness, throwing Christians, Jews, Arabs, anti-semites, straights, gays, and chiropractors all into the same figurative cage fight.
A defendant is on trial for a crime not revealed. The judge is growing delirious from his allergy medication. The prosecutor is squabbling with his desperate houseboy/husband. The Christian defense attorney and his Jewish client pummel each other with one hateful zinger after another. The backdrop for the action is a Middle East peace conference taking place in the unnamed city, which prompts one character to ask, “How can you have world peace when you can’t even have peace at home?”
Newsday called it “…..a fiesta of forbidden laughter. . . . A giddy, glorious, bad-taste valentine.”
“Romance” is directed by Karen Saari, who will be directing a cast of seven men including local favorites Lee Waldhart, Paul Milisch, and Don McCoy. (Also featuring Matt Korda, Christopher Younggren, Tim Irvin, and Scott Bennett).
“Romance” will be performed at the Bartell Theatre, August 13-September 5.
